Dave Brubeck, jazz legend and a Concord native, died today… just
one day short of his 92nd birthday.
Mr. Brubeck was on the cover of Time magazine in 1954 and was the recipient of many honors, including the National Medal of Arts in 1994.
To the musically inclined, Mr. Brubeck and his quartet was well known for polyrhythmic beats and unusual time signatures. To those not so musically inclined, they will be best remembered for “Take Five” from the album “Time Out” (1959). “Time Out” was the first jazz album to sell more than a million copies.
Mr. Brubeck lived a full and productive life, founding the Brubeck Institute at University of the Pacific in 2000 and performing into 2011.
We will all miss him, even if we don’t realize it yet.
