Godfather of Rap Gil Scott-Heron
died on Friday at 62. Although some of you are too young to remember, he made a
big splash in the '70s with "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised".
His music has been sampled by artists such as Tupac Shakur, Common, Mos Def,
and Kanye West, and has influenced generations of musicians. He is most widely
known for his social commentary, with pieces such as "Home is Where the
Hatred Is," "Angel Dust," and "Living in the Bottle". He was a published author at the age of 19.
His blend of spoken word poetry and rap is hard to define or categorize. He was
quite simply, one of a kind!Gil Scott-Heron [1949 - 2011]
