Sylvia Robinson, sometimes referred to as the mother of hip-hop
because of her and her husband’s contributions to production of “Rapper’s
Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang (the first mainstream rap single), has passed
away this morning of congestive heart failure at the age of 75. The couple also
produced “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and founded
the label Sugar Hill Records.
For those of you not of the hip-hop generation, you may possibly
remember Sylvia as the singer of the R&B classic “Pillow Talk” from 1973.
Although Sylvia had not been on the music scene in a while, I am
certain she will still be missed by many.
